Roy Buchanan: The Messiah Will Come Again
From: Roy Buchanan, 1972

Roy Buchanan: I’m A Ram
From: In the Beginning, 1974

Roy Buchanan was a guitarist’s guitarist. Highly influential but relatively unknown, sort of like Scarface before the rap world started paying attention to Texas. Taught Robbie Robertson to play guitar. Known for spending hours in the studio recording jaw-dropping solos, then recording over them with some even more impressive shit. Kind of a strange dude.

“Messiah” is a phenomenal track on its own, no doubt. Quiet organ with somber guitar noodling. Roy muttering about “a strange little town called the world.” And then it breaks wide open with a three minute solo. But what’s more strange is that directly after this song on his self-titled album comes the cheesey country-rock track called “Hey Good Lookin.” I would have included it for contrast, but it’s really terrible; instead you get Roy’s very good Al Green Cover.

Roy! The man. Messiah is one of the great electric guitar recordings of all time.

Gotta take issue with your assessment of Roy's "Hey, Good Lookin'", though. Country-rock? Please. I guess you either like Hank Williams' songs or you don't, but Roy's chord soloing throughout is brilliant.

Anyway – thanks for getting some Roy out there.

Love to hear the first Roy Buchanan track – but I've opened it & the song is only 2 seconds long. Any chance you can re-load it?

thanks for the love peoples. I'm not hating outright on "hey good lookin," but it is what it is, and what it is is a complete 180 from "messiah" and not something I'd usually check for.

(dling "messiah" works fine for me btw, try it again…)

"Messiah" est un morceau absolument fabuleux. Et quelle sonorité de guitare. Thanks a lot

  7. Eric Murphy says:

No, man. This is lame. A textbook example of the guitar solo as masturbation. Sure I can admire the guy's technical skills, but he's not talking to my soul with his noodling.

I've been looking for this version for a long time. The others out there are too fast.

Thanks a Lot for making it available!
