Placebo - Mr. Live featuring Tony Bonesfrom the 12inch The 10th Letter on Get These Records (1996). Splashin Over Monica - Mr. Live featuring Tony Bonesfrom the 12inch promo on Get These Records (1997) Brooklyn MC Mr. Live put out a bunch of different indy 12"s and EPs in themid-90s, bringing consistent lyrical work and always getting choicebeats. He frequently collaborated with British mic controller TonyBones, acting collectively under the name 88WhatsAName. I love the waytheir voices work together on tracks and in particular think TonyBones's deeply accented flowis fantastic.Placebo is probably their greatest achievement together as they set off abeautiful true school style piano vamp and heavy bass beat with stellarverses each. And in the background you can just faintly hear some bellssampled in the mix. A really nice touch that I almost wish were higherin the mix.
While Placebo is certified greatness, Splashin Over Monicais more of a confectionary treat. Referencing President Clinton'slately night action with intern Monica Lewinsky (remember whenPresidential marital infidelities was the biggest news in the nation -just seems stupid now). Again Tony Bones drawls out a nicemulti-syllabic story about how Monica was really getting down with/onhim. There was some love and hate being thrown around on the comments for theBay Area rap posts, but there is some great stuff in any regional sceneif you're willing to wade through a lot of crap to find the gold.
