Oliver Wang mailed me an advance copy of Soul Sides Volume One and that is the only quality mail my box will hold in 2006. O-Dub currated 14 songs for Zealous Records. That's right, when O-Dub makes a mix album he is currating and with a private reserve deeper than third world debt we should all hope O-Dub currates several Soul Side volumes. In a telephone conversation O-Dub said the idea of making an album had been on his to-do-list, but the legalities of the process were too much for one man. Zealous Records steps up and all of a sudden O-Dub has bloggers going bananas. Licensing for each track was accomplished and worries from lawyers knocking on O-Dub's door is non-existant. And those tracks, well living in SF with Groove Merchant only a car ride away is a definate plus. It is only a coincidence that some tracks on Soul Sides Volume One have been rap samples. O-Dub did not intend to select those tracks for the sake of sample nostalgia, but the familiarity of the originals is an added bonus. Erma Franklin's "Piece of My Heart" is the original version of the song and hearing Erma's powerful vocals puts Janis Joplin's version to shame. Joe Bataan's "Ordinary Guy" is a favorite and the version O-Dub chose is my favorite. Apparently, Bataan made three version of "Ordinary Guy" and O-Dub chose this version, because it's the only verson Bataan sees money from. (This banger should be played in every drop-top driving up the West Coast.) A portion of proceeds from Soul Sides Volume One are sent to the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and will be used to support artists from the `40s through `70s. Welcome to Soul Sides Volume One. Buy it at on vinyl or CD at Sandbox Automatic and Turntable Lab. But really, sleeping on Zealous' pre-sale ($12.00, like whoa) is a major Homer Simpson "Doh!" Buy it, buy it, buy it. |
