Jazz Liberatorz: Le Boom Bap
Posted by independent j

Breathing Pleasure - Jazz Liberatorz
from the "What's Real" 12" on KIF Recordings (2003).

It Was Only A Song - Jazz Liberatorz
from the "Force Be With You" 12" on KIF Recordings (2005).

In honor of the sporting action down in Roland Garros, up today are some Parisian beats. While the French abstract beat/downtempo scene pretty much begins and ends with DJ Cam, the production crew Jazz Liberatorz can carry the Gallic torch very well. Over the past few years, they've released a handful of 12"s and remixes. Both the records here feature "high profile, underground" (if that can be possible) vocal performances by Americans on the A-side, and a smattering of instrumentals on the flip. Both of these lovely tracks are tucked in the middle of the B-side and are on that smokey edge between acoustic jazz and sample production that DJ Krush and Fourtet have explored.

"Breathing Pleasure" features flute playing by Eric "Rico" Gaultier over sharp snare-centric drums. Nice effects also push up the flute sound to give it a lot of resonance. Even more distinctly boom bap drum programming is featured on the short "It Was Only A Song" that is highlighted by great piano lines and some nostalgic old vocals. Put these on and nod your head during a 27 shot ralley, hoping for Nadal vs. Federer in the final.
