Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rud: All You MC's and Girls I Got 'Em Locked From: Girls I Got 'Em Locked [Elektra 1988]
I wish I could say that I was listening to these guys since their album first came out back in 88, but I was 4 then so I really wasn't listening to much of anything at that point. But the real way I came about Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rud was through the best ebay purchase in the world. 3 Boxes of Yo! MTV Raps trading cards of which 2 featured the duo. Out of all 100 cards in the set, MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice each had 7 cards a piece. If you're wondering how that works it was pretty much just different poses or different shots in different venues.
Getting past the trading card business, I have an strong affinity for the late 80's party rap. This could have been made by Marly Marl for the way the samples sound and the audio, but these guys were signed to Elektra and as far as I know didn't have an association with the Juice Crew. It surprises me that they were well known enough to land on some trading cards but are basically a lost relic today. The rapping is fast and hard on the beat and the production reminds me of EPMD cross bred with Public Enemy.
After Girls I Got 'Em they dropped another EP called Blow Up the Spot 5 years later and then fell off the map. Although according to their Myspace they have a new album of some kind supposedly coming out. They're definitely the sound of a good summer jam though.Labels: 88, Hip-Hop |
